As a city, Santander is no stranger to the changes in society regarding the purchasing and consumption habits caused by the growth in e-commerce and the large shopping centres. However, the city would not be the same without its traditional shops and establishments.
In Santander, traditional shops of all times coexist now with important product chains of all kinds.
Santander is also aware of the fact that it is a tourist city which feeds on both national and foreign travellers and visitors. The foreign ones come from the different shipping routes that connect Santander with the English cities of Portsmouth and Plymouth as well as Cork (Ireland), thanks to the new connection which was opened a few weeks ago. Moreover, there are tourists which come from the flight connections with several European countries.
The ferry port is close to the city centre
The advantage of a coastal city as Santander is that, for example, the ferry port is right next to the streets. Therefore, passengers who arrive at the port only have to cross the ferry terminal and they are already in the shopping streets and in the heart of the city. There is a wide range of shops which sell clothes, footwear (calzados Oruña and Yates & Cosas Boatique), souvenirs and food, whether it is to take way or to eat in place (Mesón Goya, Zacarías, La Casa del Indiano y Peña Herbosa) within easy walking distance.
A little further into the city, the proposal expands and diversifies with new stores
Santander merchants have grouped into various collectives and associations that agglutinate the businesses of some of the most commercial and famous streets of the capital. All of them organize various initiatives with the aim of attracting tourists who spend a few days or are passing by, including the organization of draws, discounts and sales, as well as promotions, in order to let the visitor who walks through the streets of Santander find what they are looking for and perhaps take something different that they did not have in mind.
