Cantabria has been designated as the second best European destination to discover by the prestigious travel guide Lonely Planet, following the Italian region called Emilia-Romagna.

In its website, the guide defines Cantabria as a captivating and verdant region and as one of the unexpected treasures of Spain

Moreover, Cantabria is the only Spanish destination in the ranking led by the aforementioned Italian region.

The authors of the guide have particularly appreciated the revitalisation of the seafront, which now includes the new Centro Botín -designed by the architect Renzo Piano-, and the new ferry connections with other European destinations, such as the Irish city of Cork, which is the latest addition to the routes of Brittany Ferries. Besides, Santander has had shipping routes with the English ports of Plymouth and Portsmouth since the ’80s.

The authors of the guide underlined the new ferry connections

The authors of the guide also underlined “the impressive background created by the Picos de Europa, which is the oldest national park of Spain –its centenary is in 2018”. According to the guide, it is one of the charms which turn Cantabria into the second best European destination to discover.
