Today, Brittany Ferries has a fleet of 12 ships, spread over 12 different routes between Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. But the whole story has a beginning, and ours is united in a proper name, that of Alexis Gourvennec (1936-2007).
This Breton farmer, at the entrance of the United Kingdom in the EEC, saw a market opportunity in the export of vegetables on the other side of the English Channel, without the need for intermediaries. Faced with the negative refusal of shipping companies and existing ones to accept his idea, Mr. Gourvennec created what is known as Brittany Ferries. The inaugural route was Roscoff-Plymouth, on January 1, 1973, with the ship Kerisnel.
Four years later, on April 17, 1977, the first route between Plymouth and Santander began, with the Armorique ship as a link between our coasts. The port of Plymouth, a difference of Southampton used for other companies, offered the possibility of a shorter and more comfortable route for travelers.
The number of routes and boats was improved over the years
In 2011, it was added to the port of Bilbao as a new destination in Spain, a place that also today receives the only freight ship without the company’s company.
The Connemara, the last addition to the fleet, has become the last point of connection between Ireland and Spain since this month of May and from the port of Santander.
The comfort of the cabins and common spaces, the gastronomic quality offered by the French chefs on board or the decoration of the boats, each with a different personality that reflects the Breton culture; It is part of the DNA of Brittany Ferries since its creation and allows us to continue uniting the coasts of Western Europe.
